India Arie

This talented artist was born in Denver, CO.  Her parents, however, were from Memphis and Detroit (two huge music capitals.)  It was destined that music become part of India Arie’s life.  When Arie was 13, her family moved to Atlanta.  With her mother’s encouragement, Arie started playing the guitar when she graduated high school.  She became deeply involved in the music scene.  An independent label called EarthShare released a compilation CD featuring some of her first songs.  She also received a second-stage slot at Lilith Fair, which helped her secure record-label interest. Arie signed with Motown after she was told that she would have complete artistic control.  She worked on “Acoustic Soul,” her debut album, for almost two years.  Arie exhibited unrelenting perfectionism and classic musical integrity, which slowed the process considerably.  Although she had only been writing for five years, the songs on “Acoustic Soul” are considered very mature.  Her second album is entitled “Voyage to India.”

India Arie is part of a neo-classical wave of artists that successfully appeared in the 1990s.  Her roots are embedded in R&B, soul, Motown, and the blues of old; to this she adds a flare of urbanized hip-hop.  Her sound is an eclectic mix which makes her distinct and unique. 

“Video” is one of the songs from “Acoustic Soul.” “Video” is upbeat and fresh but delivers a powerful message.  It talks about what makes a woman beautiful and how we determine her worth.  She sings about loving herself unconditionally, whether she fits the standard “norms” of beauty.  She talks about valuing what you know, rather than what you look like.  She also speaks aboaut being able to have a good time without expensive drinks, cars and food.  She says she just needs her guitar.
