Reflection Questions:

  • What were you thinking and feeling as you learned about this incident of hate speech?
  • Is this situation the same as simply being mean to someone or making fun of them for some reason?  How is it similar?  How is it different?
  • In what way was the person targeted by the hate speech being demeaned and/or oppressed?
  • What group did the recipient belong to that made him or her a target of hate speech?
  • What do you think motivated the person who sent the hate-filled message to send that message? 
  • Should a person who sends hateful messages be blamed for their actions, even if they didn’t realize that what they said was harmful?
  • Why do you think that the recipient of the hate speech responded as he or she did?
  • Put yourself in the place of the target of the hate-filled message.  How would you have responded?  Why would you have responded this way? 
  • Have you ever witnessed someone expressing hate speech?  What did you think about it?  How did it make you feel?  How did you respond?
  • What did you think of the advice that the target of the hate speech gave?  Did you consider it helpful advice?  Why or why not?  What advice would you have given?  Why would you have given this advice?
  • Must a person belong to a minority group to be a target of hate speech?  Can a person who belongs to a majority group also be victim of hate speech?  Why or why not?
  • As you consider this incident and any of the other incidents presented here, what specifically have you learned about hate and hate speech?
